The Conseil des métiers d'art du Québec (CMAQ) is a reference for artisanal crafts in the province. Since its creation in 1989, it has represented, supported and promoted this richly creative and skilled sector. Today, it brings together over 1,000 member artisans, selected according to rigorous criteria that guarantees the technical mastery and quality of members’ works.
Recognized by the Loi sur le statut professionnel des artistes des arts visuels, des métiers d'art et de la littérature et sur leurs contrats avec les diffuseurs, the CMAQ plays a pivotal role in the social and economic recognition of artisans. It is involved in major issues such as cultural policy, college training and the revision of laws governing artistic work. Through studies, briefs and outreach, it works closely with public institutions, specialized schools and various cultural partners.
The CMAQ is also a driving force for development within the community. It offers a wide range of services, from continuing education and legal support to distribution and marketing tools. It contributes to raising the profile of artisanal crafts both in Quebec and internationally, notably through trade shows and online sales platforms.
The organization, which was formed from the merger of two regional associations, has evolved over time, integrating disciplines related to heritage restoration and architecture. By placing artisans at the heart of its actions, the CMAQ not only helps promote their work but also their critical role in ensuring the province’s living cultural heritage continues to be passed on.
The Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec and Les Produits du Québec
“At the Conseil des métiers d'art du Québec, buying local is more than just a trend – it’s the very essence of our mission. For over 35 years, we’ve been working to represent, support and develop the artisanal sector in Québec, highlighting the exceptional talent and know-how of our local artisans.
Our partnership with Les Produits du Québec follows naturally from this approach. By collaborating with an organization dedicated to promoting Québec products, we’re reinforcing our shared commitment to encouraging consumers to choose local creations.
Together, we hope to raise public awareness of the importance of supporting our artisans. A gesture which helps sustain the economic and cultural vitality of our regions.”
